Association of Supervisors in Ireland
Backed by a team with years of experience as supervisors, the Association of Supervisors in Ireland was founded to help bolster and grow the field of supervisory practice in Ireland, across a wide range of careers and professions.
We seek to raise the profile of the supervisory practice profession nationwide across a range of industries. We want to promote the practice of supervision to new candidates while also fostering the community of current clients, supervisory practicioners, supervisees and other relevant organisations.
We aim to organise conferences and CPD workshops on behalf of the association for those in the supervisory practice. At the same time encouraging a constantly evolving research core to our association, focused on furthering the field of the supervisory practice.
We promise nothing less than the highest standards of professional care, and also an accessible and inclusive model of supervisory practice that aims to transform the field in Ireland, by bringing in new talent and extending the potential of current supervisors.
What is Supervision? – The Mountain
The role of a supervisor is to support, develop and train practitioners in their work with clients and other customers. At Association of Supervisors in Ireland, we want to provide a professional and reliable supervisory practice services.
Our vision of Supervision is captured in the journey to the Mountain. Both the journey which is a dynamic event that brings change with the encounter of new people along the way and the Mountain which is also dynamic, in that for all appearances its static, still, and even stoic outline betrays an awesome appearance that calls us to a closer examination to allow this dynamic creative engaging reality to emerge and draw the traveller to greater heights. Supervision is the relationship along a spectrum that has clear signs posts along a well-worn path, encouraging openness, honesty and insight from different perspectives as one climbs the height to attain a better and broader vision.
The mountain climb brings pain, aches , soreness and even breathlessness as well as unexpected halts along the way. It encourages the traveller to stall, stop, listen and look, to experience a new perspective, and gain a view of beauty, setting the context for being open to a deeper awareness of self.
Supervision provides the supervisee the opportunity to stall along the way, to examine and reflect on issues of crisis, the troubled encounter, and the perplexing situation where stumbling blocks have blurred vision and gives authenticity to the perspectives of the supervisee, dealing with the abundant tensions of the head, heart and mind.
At the summit there is peace, calm, tranquillity and a deep sense of awe at the beauty, majesty and vastness of the horizon that calls our sight and imagination to a deeper sense of wonder and awe. This allows for ongoing evaluation of how we are giving and receiving, calling for a balance. Supervision brings us to that contemplation stage, that dynamic engaging encounter with self in others, where the reflective process deepens the drop of experience that allows for wisdom and wonder.
There is a sense of purpose as one gazes from perception through perspective to grasp a moment of eternal beauty that has roots in past collective experiences. Supervision surveys events of the present time, connects them to the past and frees the supervisee to restore and reengage with the current, critical and sometimes hidden aspects of the past to help provide a forum and focus to enable a breakthrough that can shape the future. In supervision this allows the creative aspect to emerge, where the inner wisdom of the heart can emerge. Coming down the mountain to the place where the journey began, change has occurred through reflection leading to a new sense of perspective.
